Top Gun: Maverick Returns to Theaters For a Limited Re-Release

Top Gun: Maverick returns to theaters in time for the holiday season. Paramount is re-releasing the blockbuster sequel to the big screen December 2-15, including select premium large format and Imax.

The film is  available now on Home Entertainment and lands on Paramount+ in December.22.

The  Tom Cruise action movie sequel, Top Gun, has already become a smash hit, grossing $1.48 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the year with a landslide win. Universal's dinosaur epic Jurassic World Dominion, the only other release in 2022  to break the $1 billion mark, is second at $1.001 billion.

In North America, "Maverick" is the fifth highest-grossing film of all time at US$716 million and the highest-grossing film of the year. Globally, Top Gun: Maverick recently surpassed Disney's Frozen II ($1.45 billion) as the 11th-biggest movie of all time.

Top Gun: Maverick truly embodies the magic of the cinematic experience, and we wanted to deliver that fans a chance to re-enjoy this film spectacle the way it was meant to be  seen,” said Chris Aronson,  president of Paramount National Distribution. "It seems like the perfect time to bring 'Top Gun: Maverick' back to theaters so viewers around the world can once again experience just how special this movie is.”

The timing is spot on for theater owners because they desperately need  content. Thanksgiving was a fiasco, and apart from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, you won't find a blockbuster  until Avatar: The Way of Water launches on December 16th. Although the summer season featured several big hits like "Maverick," "Minions: The Rise of Gru," and "Thor: Love and Thunder," those movies weren't enough to offset the fact that the studios  released 38, movies by comparison times before the pandemic. As a result, total box office is down 33% from 2019, according to Comscore. In short, exhibitors need more films to show, and to show them now.

Opening in May, Top Gun: Maverick is a box-office hit that shines time and time again. According to Paramount, it is the only film to have been #1 at the domestic box office on both Memorial Day and Labor Day. It is also considered the studio's highest-grossing domestic release.

The film broke multiple records for Cruise, marking his first film to surpass $100 million in a single weekend as well as his first to surpass $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales
